Economy: oikos-nomos, means care and management of the house; the house is seen very differently if who is looking at it is a man or a woman. Until now the view on the house and on our common home was strictly masculine. The male gaze is focused on work, on the material and institutional aspects: all this is very important, but if it becomes an absolute view it can deform reality. Woman looks more at the relationships, at what has to do with the handling of the home. This too is a look that alone is not enough, but it’s missing within large businesses, at political level, in the institutions in general. Let us begin, or let us continue, to look at this home with a female look. Above all, let’s begin to look at it together, men and women. Let’s imagine the future together.
“Woman economy” suggests: relationship, friendship, woman, environment, home, planet. Imagine a woman economy respectful and friend of the planet and of all human beings.

Alessandra Smerilli presents in this book a new economic approach, with one conviction: that women have an extra gear because they have more flexibility, which is all the more necessary in this moment. The female gaze today is missing in our plans for a future economic recovery but this gaze is very important and needs to be in our agendas

ALESSANDRA SMERILLI

Born in Vasto (Chieti) in 1974. Graduated in Economics and Business and gained a research doctorate in Political Economics from the faculty of Economics at University La Sapienza Rome, and a PhD in Economics from the School of Economics at East Anglia University. She teaches Political economy and statistical elements at the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences Auxilium. She is Secretary of the Scientific and Organizational Committee of Settimane Sociali dei Cattolici, sponsored by the Italian Episcopal Conference. In 2019 Pope Francis appointed her Councillor of Vatican City State. In 2015, she published with Luigino Bruni L’altra metà dell’economia. She takes an active part in conventions and seminars on the broader questions of today’s civil economy ranging from cooperation to development, always with a focus on the person, the family and women as economic subjects for a new model of development
